summer in review

The summer is nearing its close for me, as I return to school on Monday. And while I feel ready for a fresh school year, and am looking forward to routine in my life again, there is a part of me that wishes it could stay summer forever. Even though it can't stick around forever though, it was a summer to remember. So, in point form, here is my summer in review:

Highlights:
- Tamara & Matthew's wedding on May 12th. What a fun day - we just had a great time celebrating these two awesome people
- travelling on my own. It was so exhilarating to travel on my own for two months. There were times when I wished I had others with me, but for the most part, I enjoyed having this be my little adventure.
- staying with Ruhtt and Shepherd in Zambia for two weeks. Words don't do this family (or this woman) justice. You just have to spend time with them to truly understand.
- seeing so many familiar faces (and meeting some new ones) in Zambia
- coming to know and love a new African country (Tanzania)
- spending one month with the cutest little kids at Good Hope Orphanage, just outside Arusha, Tanzania
- getting some third-world eye care experience at the cataract project
- spending 3 days on beautiful Zanzibar
- hanging out lots with Tamara and Matthew once I returned home
- my 23rd birthday, complete with a BBQ for lunch, and a surprise party with many of my favourite people (planned by Tamara - thanks!) in the evening
- a whole week spent at Betty-Jean and Chris' cottage at Victoria Beach on Lake Winnipeg - definitely one of my favourite places to go!
- driving a car out to Ontario with mom and dad
- spending a weekend sightseeing in Ottawa with mom and dad
- spending the September long weekend with the whole family, including Jonathan and Brittany (who had just returned home from Yellowknife)

And a few more 'facts' about my summer:

Number of flights: 14
Number of airports that I flew through or into: 10 (Regina, Toronto, London Heathrow, Johannesburg, Livingstone, Lusaka, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Hamilton, Winnipeg)

Books completed: all 7 Chronicles of Narnia, The aWAKE Project, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, There is No Me Without You, Velvet Elvis, Harry Potter 7

Movies watched in theatre: Harry Potter 5, Hairspray (twice - so good!), The Bourne Ultimatum

All in all, a truly memorable summer. One of my best for sure.

Thanks for your summer memories. Reading them makes me smile! I am so happy that I shared some of them with you and that you had the thrill of having some of them to yourself. Happy first day of third year!
love, mom
