i've heard it said before by people that have moved away from the prairies into the mountains, that they felt somewhat claustrophobic, surrounded by the mountains, lacking in an open horizon. and while i kind of understood what they were talking about, i also thought it was kind of ridiculous. how do you miss the skies? besides, i loved the mountains! there is so much beauty in them, and i thought that there is still plenty of sky and horizon to be seen in them.
and then i moved to BC. and now i completely understand. don't get me wrong - i LOVE the beauty that surrounds me here. it's stunning. but i miss the skies! i long to be able to look up and see into the far off horizon, rather than having the mountain obstruct my view!
i don't think you can fully understand or appreciate an open sky until you've lived on the prairies. we may be flat, and we might not have the same immediate eye-pleasing appeal as the mountains - but there is much beauty to be found in the prairies.
i know now the saying is true ... 'you can take the girl out of the prairie, but you can never take the prairie out of the girl'. i miss my prairies!

I know what you mean as I have said those words before. We have such beautiful skies in Saskatchewan. This week, they have been cold - but no matter how cold, they are often clear and sunny - and you can see for miles.
Not many sleeps until we see you at Christmas. I am looking forward to it.
Love, mom xoxo
Jill, I completely agree with this post and I've definitely thought the same to myself as I look up at the foggy big city sky of Columbus! There's a simple beauty to Sask that can't be explained unless you grew up there. Hope you are the fam are well and you have a wonderful Christmas!
