The Olympic Torch came through Merritt on Saturday night! It was so exciting, especially since it's less than one week until the Olympics start!
There was some fun entertainment, courtesy of RBC and Coca-Cola, the two main sponsors of the torch relay. The RBC part included a guy painting a picture (see below).
And because we are in Merritt, which is the 'Country Music Capital of Canada', we had to have some good ole' country music included in the celebration, courtesy of Aaron Pritchett.
Carrie-Lynn's (the other doctor) son, Cameron, sang 'O Canada' after the torch arrived, and did a great job. Unfortunately, I don't have many great pictures or videos of the torch, because as soon as the torch got close, every kid in the place was on their parents' shoulder, leaving the rest of us who had no shoulders to get up on, with a very poor view. Bah. Oh well.
I'm so excited about the Olympics! I get to take in a couple hockey games with my dad, who is flying out just to go with me! Unfortunately, I'm not going to a Canadian game, but it should be a great experience nonetheless, just to be there.
I know there's lots of people opposed to the Olympics, for various reasons - but I love them. Firstly, I love watching sports, and the Olympics gives me two solid weeks where I know that something good will always be on TV. Secondly, I'm a sucker for an inspirational story, and the Olympics are always full of them - people overcoming great odds, achieving personal bests, and striving to be the best the can be. But even moreso, I love the whole concept of the Olympics - countries coming together, celebrating and embracing our diversity, all while competing against each other in peace. The Olympics often (not always, but most of the time) show humanity at its best. And that's why I love them!
