Prague Reflections

It's been 2.5 weeks since I arrived back on Canadian soil, so I figure it's about time I try to give some closing thoughts on the whole six week experience. I always think of this trip in three parts: Prague, Camp Balchyoca, and LST. So to keep this entry at a readable length, I'll split it up, and start with my thoughts on Prague. I've already shared some details and pictures way back when I had just left there - but I just want to give a bit more of an overview of my time there.

Prague is a BEAUTIFUL city! Looking over the river, with the sea of red roofs in the Old Town spread out in front of you, you can't help but love the city! In some ways, it reminded me of Tallinn - especially in the look and the feel of the Old Town - only on a larger scale. Away from the Old Town though, it has a much different feel than Tallinn. Architecture-wise, Tallinn has a definite feel as a "Soviet" city - the buildings are all very simple, basic buildings, and usually look very similar to the next. Prague's architecture is much more ornate, and each building is very unique.

In Prague, I was also very aware of the struggles that the people of the country have gone through in the not-so-distant past, moreso than I was in 2005 in Estonia. I'm not sure why ... maybe I'm just way more aware of the world now. Anyways, wandering through the Museum of Communism, and past visible reminders of the Communist times (such as the John Lennon Peace Wall), really struck something in me. I can't even imagine not having freedom of speech, thought or belief - and these people have lived through it ... in my lifetime. Wow.

John Lennon Peace Wall - During Communist times, this wall became somewhat of a 'monument' representing free speech and peaceful rebellion. It was painted over at times, but new graffiti would always reappear.

This memorial to the victims of Communism shows a man becoming less and less whole with each step backwards.

On a more personal note, it was great to have Chelsa there to show me around. She was a gracious host and an awesome tour guide. I was totally blessed to become a part of her "Czech" life for the four days I was there. It was awesome to just spend time talking with her, and hearing her heart and passion for the Czech country and people ... and also just life! I also loved getting a glimpse of the communities that she has been a part of for the past two years. They seemed so real, honest and true - and I found myself longing to be a part of such a community. Visiting her made the time in Prague doubly good - I got to see a good friend, all while touring around a beautiful European city! Now, I just need to find a friend in some other sweet cities ... :)

Not the best picture ... but the only one I have of the two of us in Prague

And from Prague, I flew on to one of my favourite countries in the world ... Estonia! More reflections on my time there coming soon!
