Yesterday morning, I went for a run. My route took me past my elementary school, Ethel Milliken. I noticed while running by that the doors to the K-Gr.2 wing were open, so that I could see in to the boot room ... and I realized that it was 20 years ago that I was headed through those doors for my first day of school.
I actually remember parts of the day quite well. I remember meeting Mrs. Kujat, receiving my 'Class of 2002' pin, and getting assigned my drawer where I could keep my markers, pencil crayons, gym shoes, and paint shirt. It was a good day ... and the first step required in many years of formal education.
A lot of things have changed since then ... I'm a lot bigger, and I know a lot more. Thankfully, 20 years ago, I wasn't expected to know everything all at once. I didn't need to know how to multiply and divide, how to write essays, or about elements in the periodic table. I didn't need to know about all things eye-related, or how to perform an eye exam. I didn't even have to know what I was going to be when I 'grew up'. But bit by little bit, I've come to where I am today. Teachers, family, friends, books and experiences have progressively taught me what I need to know ... in school and in life.
And it reminds me that I'm not done yet. There is still much to learn. There is still much to see. There is still much to do. I think I'll always be a student.
